ARTIST PROFILE
About Tabitha Flexman-Smith
Since a childhood obsession of tracing pictures and making 'handbags' from scraps, I have worked hard to develop myself and my practice into what it is now.

As a soon-to-be graduate from the Manchester School of Art, I have had the opportunity to work in a number of ways and discovered my love for knitted textiles. I am primarily a knitted textile designer and a mixed-media approach has been very important to me in order to incorporate different materials and techniques. Digital illustration has also become a core part of my design methods and outcomes.

Despite the digital aspect of a lot of my recent work, hand-making and hand craft techniques are incredibly important to me and the influence of this sits at the heart of all my work. Hand motifs have featured throughout my designs in this past year and I have manipulated physical work and items to incorporate into my illustrations.

I am forever inspired by concepts and themes surrounding memory and identity, and I tend to create pieces that are intimate and personal. I was taught to sew and knit by my amazing grandmothers and aunt, and I carry their love and knowledge with me in everything I do.
